So your child has a high temperature- do you need to worry?
- If your child is under 3 months old and you have recorded a temperature above 38 degrees centrigrade, you need to bring them to see a medical professional
- In children, the temperature itself isn’t harmful. It is their body’s way of trying to fight off an infection
- So if they are hot but happy, they don’t necessarily have to have medicine
How can I bring my child’s temperature down to normal?
- Keeping your child in very light clothes when at home can help a temperature reduce naturally
- If they need it, you can also give paracetamol (Calpol) as per the instructions on the bottle
- If your child is still hot and upset with a temperature even though they are stripped off and had paracetamol, they can also be given ibuprofen. Make sure you follow the instructions on the medicine you are giving
- It is recommended NOT to give ibuprofen to children with chickenpox, as this can make them very sick
