So your child has shoved something up their nose that shouldn’t be there. It might be a crayon, a bead or a part of last nights dinner.
You can’t get it out and they get upset when you try.
What should you do?
Here’s a technique we ask you to try (SEE IMAGE)
Cover the nostril (side of the nose) with your finger that DOES NOT HAVE THE OBJECT IN IT
Take a deep breath and make a seal with your mouth over your child’s mouth
Blow hard and fast into your child’s mouth whilst pressing over the nostril
The object should fly out of their nose (along with some snot)
You can try this a few times provided they are not too distressed by it
It’s still up there, what can we do now?
We might need to use some tools to remove the object
Therefore you’ll have to bring them to see a medical professional
Please know that sometimes when it is too distressing for us to keep trying, or we are unable to remove the object in the emergency department we might refer you to have it removed at a later date by a specialist team
